Islamabad, Sept 16, IRNA -- At least one person was killed and 10 others injured when police fired in the air to disperse thousands of people, who were protesting against a US-made anti-Islam movie in the Pakistani city of Karachi on Sunday, organizers said
Protesters from the ‘Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen’(MWM) crossed all barricades and succeeded to reach the American consulate. They removed the American flag and hoisted the group’s flag at the Consulate building.
Allama Amin Shaheedi, Secretary General of the group, said that one activist died due to bullet wounds. There was no official confirmation of the claim.
At least eight 10 more protesters were injured who were taken to local hospitals, Shaheedi said. Police said that three policemen were also injured after they were hit by stones thrown by the protesters.
Earlier the police fired in the air, used tear gas shells and water cannons to disperse thousands of protesters who wanted to march on the US consulate.
Paramilitary soldiers were also deployed to secure the routes to the consulate building but the demonstrators crossed all police barricades and reached the main gate of the Consulate.
The mob also burnt a police post outside the US consulate, police said. The demonstrators also attacked police mobile vans and smashed their windows.
Organizers, through loudspeakers, were asking the demonstrators to keep on moving towards the American consulate despite police firing and tear gas shelling.
The group condemned the police action and said they were peaceful but the police made them angry.
The MWM leaders later asked the protesters to end the protest outside the consulate after negotiations with the police officials.
Earlier speaking at the rally, Amin Shaheedi called for death penalty for all those involved in making the anti-Islam movie which has used derogatory words for Muslim Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Protest rallies against the movie were also held in several other cities in Pakistan on Sunday. In some places the demonstrators burnt American flag and effigy of the US President Barack Obama.
Religious parties, lawyers, traders and civil society members staged demonstrations condemning the movie, which has sparked protest across the Muslim world. They lashed out at the filmmaker for hurting the sentiments of Muslims and sabotaging interfaith harmony across the world.
