New Delhi, July 22, IRNA -- Former Indian finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee, was elected as the 13th President of India on Sunday.
Following the counting, Rajya Sabha Secretary General V K Agnihotri officially declared Pranab Mukherjee elected as the 13th President of the country with 3095 votes valued at 7, 13, 763. His rival P A Sangma secured 1483 votes valued at 3, 15, 987.
The total number of votes cast in the presidential elections was 4659, valued at 10, 47, 971, of which 4578 votes, at a value of 10, 29, 750, were valid. There were 81 invalid votes valued at 18, 221.
Voting for the Presidential election took place on July 19. The electoral college for the poll comprises MPs and MLAs.
Mukherjee, 76-year-old Congress leader, brings to the top Constitutional post a wealth of experience as he has held key positions in the party and government, including holding the portfolios of Finance, Defence and External Affairs.
The new President will be administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia on July 25.
President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will leave office on July 24.
Meanwhile, congratulations poured in from across the country for Pranab Mukherjee over his victory in Presidential poll today, with leaders expressing the hope that the nation will achieve greater heights during his tenure in Rashtrapati Bhawan.
