Islamabad, May 4, IRNA – Pakistan has said it is willing to look at alternatives other than the US drone attacks, which are illegal and totally unacceptable.
“We are open to new ideas and suggestions,” Foreign Office spokesman, Moazzam Ahmad Khan said.
The US regularly fires missiles into Pakistan tribal regions to what it calls aimed at eliminating al-Qaeda and Taliban militants, operating from there.
“We have repeatedly said that we regard drone attacks as illegal, counter productive, violative of our sovereignty and territorial integrity and, therefore, totally unacceptable,” the Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman at weekly press briefing.
“We have always been condemning drone attacks and our policy on drones is very clear,” he said.
He said there are issues between Pakistan and the US and that there is also the will at both sides to improve these relations.
The Spokesman said here is need to resolve all issues with the US, saying there has been interaction between Pakistan and the United States at various levels to resolve the issues through mutually beneficial and mutually acceptable manner.
He said Pakistan-US relations are being discussed in accordance with the last month’s recommendations of the Parliament and every thing will be decided in the context of the guidelines, given by the Parliament on Pak-US relations and NATO supply.
The parliament had called for immediate halt to the drone strikes and US apology over the killing of 24 Pakistani soldiers in November. But the US has refused to tender apology and launched a drone strike few days ago in North Waziristan tribal region, killing four people.
The Spokesman said Pakistan has not yet decided about the participation in this Summit, to be held on May 20-21 and will focus on exit strategy from Afghanistan.
Khan said the issue of participation in Chicago Summit and Pak-
US relations were discussed at a high level meeting held at President House on Wednesday but no final decision has been taken regarding the Summit.
He said Pakistan-US relations are important one and there is a desire on both the sides to come up with mutually acceptable resolution of all the issues.
He said all issues were discussed with US Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan Marc Grossman who visited Pakistan last week and the purpose of the discussions with Grossman was to convey each other’s points of view and share perspectives.
“During interaction, both the sides shared their concerns and perspectives on different issues,” he said.
He concluded that no one should try to call the discussions with Grossman a failure or success.
